Movie Recommendation #10

Eyes Wide Shut.

I feel like I am just about the only person who actually understands this movie.  It was constantly panned by the press.  The main criticism was that Cruise and Kidman "failed to generate any on screen passion."  The common folk were basically looking for a soft-core porno with 2 big stars.  When they didn't get it they cried about it.  Showing only that they did not understand even the title of the movie.

This is a completely astounding film.  Layers upon layers of meaning.  The 2 central characters have a nearly perfect life.  But their eyes are completely shut to it.  Cruise does not even physically look at his gorgeous wife.  There's immense interplay between what is seen vs. what is thought/imagined.

One of the characters says "Everyone is costumed and masked."  And if you look closely you will see many masks "behind the scenes" in the movie: on desks, as decoration on the wall, etc.

The notion of masks is, of course, central to the story.  As Cruise goes deeper & deeper into the world of masks & illusion, he learns more & more about the truth.  Truth, for example, that he is willing to risk in reality the wonderful (albeit unappreciated) life they have, simply because he is upset about his wife's fantasies.

Fantasy.  Reality.  What we show masked vs. what is real.

This is the art of filmmaking at its finest.

Run Away.     OK, I'll try one more.
