To Hate What God Hates

A reader comments:

I'm nervous about "hating what God hates" and that you think that's good. I hope you aren't talking about the old testament fire and brimstone that I believe the human race could do without.

I understand the reader's nervousness.  We have become uncomfortable with the word "hate" in today's politically correct world.  Jeffrey Dahmer (who murdered many young men and then cannibalized them) was just a misunderstood youth with an eating disorder, right?  In the name of misplaced compassion we are now expected to tolerate all manner of abominations.

And this is particularly true in the so-called church.  Due to the watered-down, weak-kneed "gospel" preached, we mindlessly sing "God is love" and "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild", while the truth, the full Biblical witness, gets slain on the altar of spineless religion:

Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Revelation 2:6 But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

I will give you the clearest example I can.  Almost a parable.

If I walk into your house to find your daughter (or son) being raped, I must stop the rapist, by whatever means necessary, even if that means killing him.  In this way I show compassion and love to the victim.

We have, simply stated, become far too complacent in today's world, both in and outside the Church.  We regularly tolerate, rationalize and even justify things which are detrimental to the individual and society as a whole.  Life is cheapened.

And Jesus weeps again.

I could go on and on here, but I resist the urge to rant.  The key point is that "hate" is the emotion / reaction. To hate what is evil is, mathematically, good.  How we react to it is within our control.  We can find and take action with reasoned, measured responses.  And slaughtering villages of women and children does not meet the criteria.
