A Treatise on CosmologyThe FiveStates of Energy / MassFrom the beginning, early man looked around in wonder. What will feed, what will kill, what will intoxicate? What can we kill and eat, what wants to kill and eat us? Where is up, and down, and just where are we in the middle? How, plainly said, do things work? One of the earliest, systematic approaches to The Cosmos, a working theory attempting to explain Everything, said that the entire cosmos was made of exactly 5 Elements or Essences:
These 5 Essences were arranged in a specific hierarchy. From highest to lowest:
Earth (rocks) dropped in Water fall to the bottom of the pond. Water (in streams, rivers, and ponds) rests or moves on top of Earth. Hold your breath under Water, and the released bubbles of Air rise above the water. The flames and smoke from Fire rise into the highest regions of the Air. And they had a remarkable balancing ability, each having dominion over others, like the classic scissors/paper/rock game. Fire can evaporate water, but water can extinguish fire. Air can blow the Earth away in dust, but too much Earth in the Air and one cannot breathe. With all the combinations of the visible Four (Quintessence was never seen, only theorized) the complexities of the universe existed.
